PACTS  Politicians Accountable for Climate To Students

PACTS

About

In June 2024 Reboot the Future, in collaboration with The Harmony Project and SEEd (Sustainability and Environmental Education), launched PACTS (Politicians Accountable for Climate To Students). This groundbreaking initiative empowers students to engage directly with politicians on climate action, fostering a sense of agency, responsibility, and real-world impact.

Google Academy Launch

On 17th September 2024, PACTS was officially launched at Google Academy in London. The event was designed to raise awareness among schools and MPs, inspiring schools to sign up and take action.

Bringing together a diverse mix of MPs, business leaders, educators, Reboot Ambassadors, teachers, schoolchildren, and members of the Google Education Team, the launch event hosted over 100 attendees.

The launch was opened by Kim Polman, followed by Lord Jim Knight, who shared his invaluable experience as an MP in the education sector. Reboot the Future introduced the initiative and its six-step program, highlighting how it supports schools in addressing climate issues and empowering students to engage in civic action.

Key highlights from the event included:

  • Workshops led by Ann Finlayson (SEEd) and Richard Dunne (The Harmony Project), where students voiced their perspectives on climate challenges and committed to actions they felt inspired to take.

  • A powerful discussion panel featuring students from Harris Westminster Sixth Form, Lord Jim Knight, and Labour MP Rachel Blake. Students posed thoughtful, challenging questions, which were met with empathetic and well-considered responses, demonstrating the power of collaboration and dialogue in driving meaningful change.

Call to Action: All attendees were encouraged to promote PACTS within their schools and networks, becoming part of a movement for climate accountability in education.

Empowering Student Voices

PACTS transforms how students understand and engage in politics, providing a structured six-step process that empowers them to:

  1. Identify Climate Concerns – Students pinpoint the environmental issues they care about most.

  2. Take Action in Their School – Schools implement sustainability initiatives that align with student concerns.

  3. Research Local MPs – Students investigate their MP’s climate commitments and policies.

  4. Communicate with MPs – Students write to their MPs, initiating dialogue and advocating for action.

  5. Build Relationships – Students sustain engagement with MPs, ensuring climate remains a priority.

  6. Ensure Accountability – Students track their MP’s progress on climate promises and follow up over time.
