Inspiring Systemic Thinking at PwC Sustainability Forum 2024

About

At the 2024 PwC Sustainability Forum, Reboot and Ruth Dobson Consulting transformed the traditional speaker format into a dynamic, interactive session for 160 senior leaders. Through storytelling, competition, and collaborative thinking, participants were inspired to reconnect with themselves, one another, and the planet. This immersive experience fostered systemic thinking, addressing the critical challenge of disconnection in sustainability.

Objective

  • Deliver a fun, interactive, and memorable event that blends deep thinking with light-hearted competition.
  • Encourage teams to think beyond their usual remits by engaging with external experts who spark new ideas and systemic perspectives.
  • Generate practical application beyond the event, prompting shifts in everyday ways of working and thinking.

Solution

Reboot and Ruth Dobson Consulting designed a 90-minute interactive debate centred around the Planetary Provocation: “Evidence has revealed that disconnection is at the heart of humanity’s downfall.”

  • The Mission: Teams were tasked with advocating for a Route to Recovery—a powerful idea to address the fundamental issue of disconnection from the Earth and one another. This urgent mission emphasised systemic thinking and actionable solutions.
  • Expert Pairing: Each team collaborated with an external expert who shared their personal story and advocated for a specific Route to Recovery. Themes included:
    • Kindness (the "Golden Rule") Kim Polman - Co-Founder & Chair of Reboot the Future
    • Imagination - Sara Roversi -Founder of the Future Food Institute
    • We Are Nature - Rich Good - Creative Catalyst at Eden Project
    • Social Entrepreneurship - Anuradha Chugh, Non Exec Director, Board Member, CEO, Bio-Leadership Project Fellow, Sustainable Business Leader
    • Seventh Generation Thinking: Anthony Bennett - CEO Reboot the Future
  • Engagement: Teams presented their responses, competing in a fast-paced, exciting session that combined mystery, expectation, and light-hearted rivalry.
  • Additional Trial: Reboot also hosted a 120-minute guided walking conversation, The Moon Walk, in the evening outside the main programme in the beautiful grounds of the conference in the French countryside. This session explored mythological and commercial perspectives on the moon and near space, connecting these themes to participants’ personal and professional lives.

Result

  • Rated as one of the top sessions at the forum for its innovative design and engaging format.
  • Sparked reflections on holistic and systemic approaches to sustainability, encouraging participants to think beyond traditional paradigms.
  • Successfully challenged participants to embrace a more connected, purpose-driven approach to addressing sustainability challenges.
