Reboot Walking Conversations: The Crown Estate's Ambitions for Nature Recovery

About

Reboot the Future hosted guided Walking Conversations for The Crown Estate (TCE) to bring their Ambitions for Nature Recovery strategy to life for London-based employees. In partnership with The Royal Parks and a renowned forager, these sessions encouraged participants to reflect on their connection with nature and explore how their work can actively contribute to biodiversity and sustainability.

Objective

To inspire TCE employees to reconnect with nature, reflect on their motivations, and align their work with the organisation's nature recovery goals. The aim was to foster a sense of stewardship and reimagine London as a city where nature flourishes and is cherished.

Solution

Reboot the Future organised a guided walk through London’s streets and Royal Parks, structured to:

  • Explore the Crown Estate’s Ambitions for Nature Recovery strategy.

  • Inspire participants with insights from thought leaders and nature advocates.

  • Facilitate reflective and collaborative conversations about biodiversity and sustainability.

Key components of the event included:

  • Welcome and Introduction: Setting intentions, presenting the strategy, and framing the walk with a focus on flourishing nature.

  • Nature Observation Walk: Participants walked to St James’s Square, observing intentional and accidental appearances of nature, reflecting on its impact.

  • Expert Insights: Engaging talks by Bill Eyres (Nature Recovery Director) and Alister Hayes (Head of Conservation at The Royal Parks), who shared their experiences and goals for flourishing nature.

  • Personal Reflections: In pairs, participants shared personal stories of connection to nature, discussing places and experiences that shaped their perspectives.

  • Vision for the Future: Collaborative discussions and activities to imagine a flourishing, cared-for urban environment, guided by the Golden Rule and connectedness principles.

  • Interactive Conversations: Walking and talking through St James’s Park, participants envisioned their roles in creating positive change.

Additionally, an Audio Journey was created to ensure all employees across the UK could participate in the experience:

The Crown Estate’s approach to nature recovery involves joined-up action across land and sea to restore nature and create lasting benefits for people, planet, and the environment. To extend the reach of the Walking Conversations, an immersive audio journey was developed. This audio experience enables employees to:

  • Reconnect with Nature: Engage deeply with their surroundings through soundscapes and guided prompts.

  • Relieve Stress: Experience the calming effects of storytelling and reflective practice.

  • Access Anytime, Anywhere: Participate regardless of location, fostering inclusivity.

  • Inspire Action: Evoke a passion for achieving TCE’s ambitions for nature recovery.

The audio journey combines:

  • Storytelling and reflections from Bill Eyres, Alister Hayes, and Des from The Windsor Estate.

  • Immersive soundscapes to heighten sensory awareness.

  • Prompts for reflective practice, encouraging listeners to imagine a flourishing world.

This meditative walk-through audio inspires listeners to connect with their environments, reflect on their roles in restoring nature, and feel empowered to contribute to a greener future.

The Walking Conversations left a lasting impact on participants and the organisation:

  • Employees felt re-energised and more connected to nature, with a deeper understanding of the Ambitions for Nature Recovery strategy.
